Tuesday 12th February - walk **** – Juniper Top and Happy Valley walks – Box Hill – sunny periods.

After a couple of great windsurfing session this month it is time to load the van and head for the French Mountains in search of some snow:) We start with a small detour to visit our son Robert, his partner Hannah and the wonderful Arlo in Surrey stopping on the way for some mountain training at Box Hill, scene of the Olympic cycle race. We parked at the free zig zag carpark and walked the steep path to the Visitor Centre which offers stunning views of the magnificent hills all around. We usually end up heading down to the River Mole but decided to try anther route this time. After getting a couple of maps we avoided the really muddy riverside but even the top paths were still very muddy, I think they must get more rain in these parts than in sleepy Suffolk! We start with the purple walk called Juniper Top and finish off with half the Happy Valley walk. Starting at the Visitor Centre you continue to Salomons Memorial with its panoramic vistas continuing parallel to the road before turning left into the lovely woods with very few people about:) There are several marked cycle/bridle ways marked, which would make a nice bike ride when drier and if you were feeling fit enough to bike up the steep zig zag road to get here!!! You leave the wood at Juniper Top and head down sharply over a large grassed area down through Happy Valley. We get in a bit of a muddle here but eventually find the yellow path leading up to Broadwoods Tower past a group of school kids having a great time making wood shelters:) Back down to the van for a cuppa and scone having been out two hours covering nearly four miles. It was then a twenty-minute drive to meet up with the family followed by a day with Arlo before getting a late shuttle on Wednesday evening. We are heading first to the Jura mountains near Geneva – can’t wait:)
